The challenge
Anaemia is common in rural Cambodia, and the award entry says iron supplements were too expensive for most families. Earlier trials with a plain block of iron had failed because people wouldn't cook with it, Strategy reported.
The idea
The ingot is shaped like a fish, which the entry calls a Cambodian symbol of luck. Families put it in boiling water or soup for about ten minutes to release iron into the food. It grew out of PhD research by Christopher Charles at the University of Guelph, begun in Cambodia in 2008, and the company was formed in 2012. Geometry Global Dubai and Memac Ogilvy worked with Lucky Iron Fish to take it to market, and Geometry Global Dubai entered it at Cannes Lions 2015. After critics said the agency hadn't created the product, Cannes Lions and the agencies agreed that Lucky Iron Fish should be the sole recipient of the Product Design Grand Prix. Geometry's statement said the product and prototype were created by Lucky Iron Fish and that Geometry had helped introduce it to a wider audience.
Results
- A 50% drop in iron deficiency after nine months, according to Geometry Global's June 2015 release, which doesn't name the study behind the figure
- Online sales rose from 100 fish a month to 100 an hour, Lucky Iron Fish CEO Gavin Armstrong said in the same release
- A later randomised trial in Cambodia, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2017 and co-authored by the company's CEO, found the fish did not raise haemoglobin in anaemic women and did not recommend its use there
