The challenge
In Pakistan, 21% of girls are married before 18, according to the agency's entry, which cites UNICEF's figure of nearly 19 million child brides. Efforts were under way to raise the minimum age of marriage to 18, and UN Women wanted lawmakers to act.
The idea
Members of Pakistan's National Assembly received invitations to fictional children's weddings, on cards designed entirely by children: dozens of girls aged 5 to 15 from all backgrounds drew them, and one was an actual child bride. The mailer used the local custom of hand-delivered printed wedding cards, and a film shows the children, faces unseen, drawing the invitations. Campaign Middle East reported that the whole production, made with BBDO Pakistan, cost under US$1,500.
Results
- Lawmakers held up the cards in the National Assembly to call for a law protecting children, according to the agency's award entry
- Dozens of lawmakers spoke up, for a reach of more than 25 million, Campaign Middle East reported
