The New President.

With Lebanon's presidency empty since October 2022, An-Nahar trained an AI on its archive and launched it in April 2024 as an "AI president" for Lebanon, open to anyone's questions.

The challenge

Lebanon had been without a president since October 2022, after parliament failed again and again to elect one. According to the agency's award entry, An-Nahar also wanted to grow its readership.

The idea

An-Nahar and IMPACT BBDO trained large language models on the paper's archive, which the agency puts at more than 90 years and 30,000 editions, to create an AI president that answers in Arabic and English in a voice of its own. At the launch, editor-in-chief Nayla Tueni interviewed it in a live broadcast, that day's print edition carried its positions on the issues facing the Lebanese, and the public could question it at OurPresident.ai. An-Nahar later reported that ministers in Najib Mikati's government put questions to it in a cabinet session.

Results

  • More than 100,000 responses, a 31% rise in website visits and a 28% rise in subscriptions, according to the entrant's case published by WARC
  • Coverage in more than 100 publications worldwide and over US$25 million in earned media, according to the agency's award entry
