Shield the Protest

The challenge

The campaign's award entry says the right to protest is under threat in more than 30 countries, with protesters seriously injured by so-called 'less-lethal' weapons such as rubber bullets.

The idea

Courageous Conversation Global Foundation and Horizon FCB, with the Paris agency Change, re-engineered the protest sign into a defensive tool that still works as a sign. According to the entry, ballistic tests showed that no traditional sign material could withstand a rubber bullet launcher, so the shield combines a polyurethane lining, seven layers of fibreglass to absorb the impact and a cardboard face, mounted on two handles. Material lists, cutting guides and instructions were shared openly so anyone could build one.

Results

  • The campaign spread from Paris to demonstrations in other countries and prompted policy discussions in France, according to the agency's award entry
