#NotABugSplat.
A giant portrait of a child was laid out in a field in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a frequent drone target, so operators looking down would see a face instead of a dot.

The challenge
US drone operators reportedly called kills 'bug splats', because people seen on screen look like insects. Civilian deaths in Pakistan's tribal areas were going largely unseen.
The idea
An artist collective used French artist JR's Inside Out project to print a huge portrait of a local child and unroll it among mud houses and farms in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Drone cameras and satellites would capture it, so it would also show up on online maps. Reprieve and the Foundation for Fundamental Rights helped launch it, aiming to build empathy among operators and push policy debate.
