The challenge
Ireland has lost an estimated 2,100 pubs since 2005, around one every three to four days, Heineken says. In Kilteely, County Limerick, when publican Noreen Ahern could no longer keep Aherns open, the village faced losing its last shared social space. The film is the latest chapter of Heineken Ireland's For the Love of Pubs platform, after Pub Museums (2024) and Pub Succession (2025).
The idea
Twenty-six residents with no hospitality experience bought the pub and reopened it as The Street Bar; Marketing Dive reports they raised €300,000. Heineken stepped in with business guidance, bar training and equipment. Gar O'Rourke's 10-minute documentary premiered at the Dublin International Film Festival on 28 February 2026 and toured rural communities through March, each screening ending with a Q&A with the Kilteely shareholders and a local Heineken representative, alongside an online hub for communities trying to save their pubs.
Results
- One of the communities the film reached has since completed the purchase of its own local pub, according to Heineken Ireland
