The challenge

The film 'aims to raise awareness of Saudi Arabia’s species richness and biodiversity and its distinctive geographical areas, and highlights the leading efforts exerted by the Kingdom to protect wildlife, preserve rare species, and acquaint the world with its various rich resources,' the Ministry of Media said at its release (Business Wire).

The idea

Horizon starts beneath the sea, moves through the mangroves of the Farasan Islands, with their pelicans and flamingos, to deserts where gazelles, ostriches and bustards are being reintroduced, climbs into the mountains for vultures, ibex and the Arabian leopard, and ends at KAUST, where 3D scanning is used to preserve coral reefs (MUSE). Konoz assembled a production team of 50 who filmed in 28 locations across the Kingdom, with the Emmy-winning British cinematographer Gavin Thurston as director of photography and input from 13 Saudi researchers (Arab News). It was made with the National Center for Wildlife and was streaming on Netflix by mid-January 2024 (Business Wire).
