Meta lets advertisers set age and gender for each ad creative.

Meta has switched on a Marketing API option that lets advertisers give each image or video in an ad set its own age range and gender. The catch is that the ad set itself has to stay broad and can't use Advantage+ audience.

The feature, called "Choose an audience for each ad creative", was announced on 19 October in a Meta for Developers blog post by Graham Mahon and opened to Marketing API partners the same day. Meta's examples were a financial services brand pointing retirement videos at people aged 50 to 65 while savings videos go to all ages, and a fashion retailer matching women's and men's sweater images to each gender. Meta's API reference, titled "Creative audience pairing", sets each creative's audience with a minimum age of 18 or above, a maximum of up to 65, and one or both genders. Eight ad set, ad and creative endpoints are affected.

The rules at ad set level are strict. While pairing is on, the ad set's minimum age must sit between 18 and 25, its maximum must be 65 and it must be open to all genders. It can't be combined with Advantage+ audience or with Meta's age and gender suggestions, and requests that break these rules return an error. That is notable, because Meta has spent the past two years steering buyers towards automation, including removing detailed targeting exclusions in January 2025.

Plenty is unclear. Meta hasn't said whether a creative's audience is a hard limit or just a signal for its delivery system, whether the option appears in Ads Manager, or which markets, objectives and placements are covered. It also hasn't said how the feature works for special ad categories such as financial products, and it published no test results.

For Gulf advertisers that run different creative for different groups, such as banks with products for different life stages or fashion retailers with separate men's and women's ranges, this could mean fewer ad sets and pooled budgets. Because it starts in the API, agencies and buying tools in the region will need to update their integrations before most planners in Riyadh or Dubai see it.

Why it matters

It's a rare step back towards manual demographic control at Meta, letting one ad set carry different messages for different groups without splitting the budget.
